Elen & Roman — Wedding at Haghartsin Monastery, Armenia

Elen and Roman were married in the church at Haghartsin Monastery, a medieval monastery in the forested hills near Dilijan, in Armenia’s Tavush region.

Haghartsin isn’t a place that needs decorating. The white stone walls and the soft light inside the old buildings already set the mood, so my job was to stay close, stay quiet and notice.

Elen wore a long-sleeved lace dress by Faina and carried a cascading bouquet of deep red flowers, the one strong colour against all that pale stone.

After the ceremony they wandered the monastery grounds together, past old doorways and crumbling walls, with Roman never far from Elen’s side as her veil trailed over the stones.

I photographed the day on both digital and film. The black-and-white frames keep the focus on the two of them, while the colour images hold the warmth of the stone and the red of the bouquet.
